Renal Scans





   This thirty-five minute test is used to determine the size, position, and anatomy of the kidneys. It is also used to detect renal tumors, cysts, and trauma. Functional status of the kidneys in obstructive disease, renal disease, obstructive uropathy, pyelonephritis, acute tubular nephritis, and renal transplant can also be evaluated. Lastly, this study can be used to analyze renal perfusion and morphology.    The patient is given medication and instructed to drink 3 to 4 glasses of water 30 minutes before the study begins. The patient is then injected with in isotope. The flow study is then acquired. One-minute static images are taken every minute for 29 minutes. Static images will be acquired at 30 minutes for 5 minutes. The renogram can then be generated from these images.
